This painting is about capturing Ozzie Guillén’s legacy with the Chicago White Sox — from his years on the field to leading Chicago to a World Series championship in 2005 and now having his No. 13 forever retired. I dreamed of creating this painting from the moment I learned Ozzie’s jersey would be retired. I spent hours developing the concept and nearly two weeks bringing every detail to life, knowing I wanted this piece to tell the story of what Ozzie has meant to the White Sox and to Chicago. One of the most meaningful details is Ozzie’s name and No. 13 painted alongside the other retired numbers inside the stadium. I included it in my original concept without knowing that would ultimately become the actual location where his retired number would be displayed. What made this piece even more meaningful was having the opportunity to personally present and gift the original painting to Ozzie on the day of his jersey retirement. After spending weeks imagining that moment while I worked on the painting, getting to finally hand it to him and hear him say it was “awesome” was something I’ll never forget. This piece means so much more to me than just a painting. It represents Ozzie’s place in White Sox history, a championship that Chicago will never forget, and a moment in my own journey as an artist that I will always remember.
