USA Men’s Hockey — The Miracle Meant to Happen
The Idea
After finishing my USA Women’s Hockey painting and my Jack Hughes piece, I knew I wanted to create a larger painting dedicated to the entire USA Men’s Hockey team.
I wanted this piece to capture the energy, pride, emotion, and brotherhood that defined Team USA during the 2026 Olympics.
Building the Composition
This painting took a long time to figure out because there weren’t many strong reference photos from the Olympics that captured everything I wanted.
Instead of relying on one image, I created many of the scenes myself by combining multiple references and designing my own compositions using photoshop.
I wanted every part of the painting to represent a meaningful moment from Team USA’s Olympic run.
The Hughes Brothers
One of the first moments I included was Jack and Quinn Hughes together with the American Flag wrapped around them.
I loved the brother dynamic they had throughout the Olympics, and it immediately reminded me of my relationship with my twin sister. Growing up, we played sports together competitively, and there’s something special about competing alongside your sibling.
That’s why I also loved watching the Hughes brothers and Tkachuk brothers represent Team USA together.
Honoring Johnny Gaudreau
One of the most emotional moments from the Olympics was the tribute to Johnny Gaudreau.
Johnny Gaudreau tragically passed away in a bike accident and would have likely been part of Team USA if he were still here. Throughout the Olympics, his jersey remained in the locker room, and the team carried his presence with them throughout the tournament.
Auston Matthews, Zach Werenski, and Matthew Tkachuk honoring him with his jersey became one of the most powerful moments of the 2026 Olympics for me.
There were not many usable photos of this moment, so I completely created the composition myself by combining different references for facial expressions, body positions, and gestures.
I designed Matthew Tkachuk holding the American flag and built the scene exactly how I imagined it.
Even though it took a long time to figure out, it became one of my favorite parts of the painting.
The Other Moments
I also included Brady Tkachuk, whose competitiveness and passion stood out throughout the tournament. Since there were not many Olympic reference photos of him that I liked, I referenced one of his iconic moments from the Four Nations tournament and adapted the jersey and helmet colors to match the Olympic uniform.
What made painting Brady even cooler to me was that my younger brother had actually played against him growing up.
Connor Hellebuyck was another huge part of Team USA’s success. During the gold medal game, he made incredible saves that kept the team alive. The reference image I used captured one of those key moments against Canada, although I had to reconstruct parts of the composition because another player blocked portions of the original photo.
And finally, I included the iconic Jack Hughes celebration in the top corner — the moment that inspired everything.
What This Painting Represents
This painting represents pride, emotion, brotherhood, and belief.
It reflects what made the 2026 Olympics feel so special — the passion these players had representing Team USA and the moments that brought people together watching them.
For me, this painting also reflects the spirit of Miracle — another unforgettable Team USA hockey moment 46 years later.
Watching both the USA women’s and men’s teams win gold made me feel an incredible amount of pride for our country. I was wearing my USA jersey during the final olympic game, feeling so proud to be American because of how much pride these players had representing our country on that stage.
It felt like the entire country was united during those moments, and that feeling is what I wanted this painting to capture.
