Jack Hughes — USA Olympic Hero
The Inspiration
After the USA Women’s team won gold, it was time for the USA men to face Canada in the Olympic final.
Before the game, I kept thinking about one of my favorite movies: Miracle. The movie tells the story of the 1980 USA Men’s Hockey team — a team nobody expected to win — who went on to defeat the Soviet Union and eventually win Olympic gold for Team USA.
I watched Miracle twice while painting my USA Women’s Hockey painting, and it completely changed the way I viewed the 2026 USA Men’s team. You could feel the pride they had representing our country.
The 2026 Gold Medal Game
The final game against Canada was nerve-wracking.
The game stayed close the entire time and was tied 1–1 going into overtime.
Then Jack Hughes scored the game-winning goal in overtime.
It was one of those moments that instantly becomes iconic. Watching both the USA women’s and men’s teams defeat Canada for gold was such an amazing feeling and made me so proud to represent our country.
What stood out most to me about Jack Hughes was the emotion and pride he had after scoring that goal.
The Painting
After Team USA received their gold medals, there was a photo taken of Jack Hughes wrapped in the American flag.
The second I saw that image, I knew I had to paint it.
What inspired me most was the pride he had representing Team USA and the emotion behind that moment. I immediately sketched the image the same night the photo came out.
One detail I actually changed in my painting was adding the gold medal around his neck, which was not in the original reference photo. I referenced multiple images to study the scale and positioning of the medal and lanyard to make it feel realistic.
The Connection to Miracle
One thing that completely shocked me while rewatching Miracle was seeing the name “Jack Hughes” appear during one of the roster-cut scenes in the movie.
Obviously it wasn’t this Jack Hughes — but it felt surreal.
It almost felt like that moment wasn’t meant for him yet… until 46 years later, when Jack Hughes scored the Olympic gold medal-winning goal for Team USA.
That connection stayed with me throughout the painting process.
What This Painting Represents
This painting represents pride, belief, and one of the most iconic moments from the 2026 Olympics.
It captures the emotion of representing your country and the feeling of accomplishing something bigger than yourself.
For me, this painting also represents the connection between sports, storytelling, and moments that inspire people long after they happen.
